Giving Back to the Community
When you book your vacation at Casa Vecino you are helping us give back to the community – which we do as often as we can – so thank you for your support. If you want to do more while you are here these are some groups that we work with and some ideas for how you can help.
When we first moved to Sayulita, we were inspired by the strong sense of community and the genuine opportunities to get involved and give back. To this day, many of our best Sayulita friends we met early on while volunteering with Sayulita Animals, attending fundraisers for Grupo Pro Sayulita (GPS) and Costa Verde International School’s (CVIS) Scholarship Fund and attending clean ups of the town, beach, river, and town.
Fast forward 8 years and we still love Sayulita more than ever and more than ever we appreciate how positive efforts in our small town can make a big difference. We are super proud to say that we now play a big role with SayulitAnimals, we have become members and regular donors with GPS, we have been able to help sponsor local kids to attend CVIS, and we now help organize regular street and beach clean ups.
Here are some of the things we are working on and ways that you can help either by donating or volunteering while you are here on your next vacation:
SayulitAnimals: SayulitAnimals is an amazing organization that was founded 10 years ago to address Sayulita’s street dog population. It has grown to also help with cats and does weekly spay and neuter clinics and helps connect homeless animals with foster and adoptive families while also educating the next generation of locals about animal rights and welfare.
For us animals and animal welfare are some of our biggest passions. The first place we volunteered when we moved here was Sayulita Animals where we expected to help walking dogs or giving them baths. However, in our first week of service, we were asked to help with an emergency foster of a really sick dog. His name was Mr. Big and he was a large, cross-eyed hound dog. He joined our pack and fit right in with our to Canadian Chihuahuas that we had moved to Sayulita with. He was an amazing dog and opened our eyes and our hearts up to helping more animals. Since then we have shared our home with more than 70 dogs and cats (along with the occasional injured bird, bat, or iguana). We have been able to rehabilitate and set free most of the wild animals and found adoptive homes for most of the dogs and cats. Some of these dogs and cats have stayed with us at Casa Vecino making Casa Vecino a great place to stay if you love animals.

Globally the world and its oceans are facing an uphill battle against garbage and especially plastic. Sayulita is no different and with a steady stream of travelers visiting each year and limited support from government much of the responsibility for keeping Sayulita clean falls on private citizens. Sayulita is meeting this challenge and
While you are here in Sayulita you can do some simple things to reduce plastic waste and help make your vacation a little greener.
- Don’t litter
- Attend a garbage clean up or simply pick up some garbage during your day
- Pack a reusable bottle for water and other drinks for each member of your group and reduce the amount of plastic bottles and to go cups that you use.
- Bring reusable shopping bags to reduce the number of single use plastic bags (Casa Vecino provides reusable shopping bags).
- If you are getting take out bring a reusable bag and some “Tupperware” containers rather than single use restaurant to go containers (Casa Vecino provides reusable containers for left overs) and say no to plastic cutlery.
- Say no to straws by saying sin pipotes
